Ex Officio Definition

(Lat. by virtue of his office). Many powers are granted and exercised by public officers which are not expressly delegated, or an office may be an incident to another, and filled by the incumbent thereof. Thus, the mayor may be ex officio a member of the city board of control. A judge, for example, may be ex officio a conservator of the peace and a justice of the peace.

Related to political science, the following is a definition of Ex Officio in the U.S. practice of politics: From Latin, meaning, “by virtue of one’s office.”

Ex officio status in all sub-committees is usually granted to the committee chairman and minority leader. They are typically not permitted the same voting rights. For example, the Vice President serves ex officio as president of the Senate, but is only permitted to vote in a tie-breaker situation.
